How annoying is it when RIGHT when you hit your running groove, your Beyoncé playlist switches from “Check On It” to the much more downbeat “Blue”? Spotify just developed an amazing new feature that ensures that you’ll never have to scramble for the skip button again.
CEO Daniel Ek announced on Wednesday that in addition to a slew of other new features (including streaming video), the Spotify app will now be able to connect with your smartphone’s sensors in order to detect the tempo of your run—and pick a song from your favorites that has a corresponding beat. Or, you can choose from six different running “experiences” ahead of time, which are DJ-curated; original soundtracks that tailor to workouts of different intensities. Even if you end up picking the same experience (featuring names like “Blissed Out” and “Burn”), you’ll still get a different soundtrack every time. The goal, Chief Product Officer Gustav Söderström said, is to keep the runner’s high going long past the length of a three-minute song.
The final exciting piece of news for fitness junkies is that Spotify has also teamed up with Nike, so that Nike+ app users will get their own tailored set of running soundtracks and music experiences.
This will all be available this summer—so it’s just a matter of time until you can enjoy a nice, “Run the World (Girls)”-paced run.
