12 Apostles restaurant addresses alleged racist incident

On Saturday (3 January) 702/CapeTalk’s Africa Melane spoke to Tumi Mpofu who shared her experience of alleged racism at the 12 Apostles restaurant Azure.

According to Tumi, her father called the 12 Apostles restaurant Azure to make a booking for a table of six and was told they had a table available. He was asked for his details and, as soon as he gave his surname, he was told that there was no longer a booking available. The caller suspected that the booking had suddenly disappeared because they were black. She then asked her white friend to call and see if she would get a booking. The white friend received a table booking with the same number of people at the same time.

When the first two people arrived they were seated, however, when the rest of the party arrived they were told that there was no booking under the name that they had given.

The two who were seated were then asked to move from the table and were offered seating in another room which they refused. They then called the white friend who had made the booking to confirm their reservation. She then spoke to the restaurant management and a table was found for them. The manager apologised to them and offered free drinks and food, which the party turned down.

Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa General Manager Michael Nel then came on air and apologised for the incident. He claims human error in capturing the booking was to blame and that it was not a racist incident. He gave his assurance that they do not discriminate against people based on their race.
